Chief’s Island in the Moremi Game Reserve in Botswana
Chief’s camp holds a special place in our hearts, as both of us started our careers in this industry working for Abercrombie & Kent in their development division. Chief’s camp was one of the properties we worked on extensively in our time there. So when the opportunity arose to redesign the interiors of the bedroom pavilions we were most excited.
The design of the interiors is Contemporary African. The use of furniture with clean lines and simple design, paired with textured linen upholstery lends itself to the desired style. The colour palette is neutral with flashes of vivid green, resembling the colour of rejuvenated grass and reeds that are abundant in the delta after the rains have come. We wanted the interiors to blend seamlessly with the bush and not to distract or compete with the beauty of the surroundings.
Chief’s Camp is a 5 star bush camp with 12-luxury thatch roof bush pavilions. Each bedroom pavilion features an outside area with a private plunge pool, which is a perfect way to spend the hot afternoons if you choose not to go on the game drive. The units comprise indoor & outdoor showers, a feature that has become synonymous with Sanctuary Retreats properties. The rooms have ceiling fans as the temperatures can get up to 38 degrees in the summer months, private viewing decks to spot the big 5, four-poster beds, a minibar, hairdryers and in-room safes.
Every year Travel + Leisure put together the It List, which is an annual collection of the best new hotels around the globe. They chose 44 hotels and resorts, which are making waves for different reasons in the hospitality world and Chief’s camp was chosen!
Chief’s camp is situated on Chief’s Island in the Moremi Game Reserve in Botswana. The island gets it name, as it was once the sole hunting area of the local chief. It’s the largest Island in the Okavango Delta – 70km long and 15km wide. The Okavango Delta is synonymous for its yearly flooding. The source of this flooding lies in the wet highlands of Angola to the north of Botswana. The flood starts coming into the northern areas of the Okavango Delta around late April.
Activities at Chief’s Camp include guided game drives in 4×4 vehicles; Mokoro excursions through the narrow Delta waterways during the flood season and a scenic flight over the delta in a helicopter can also be arranged.
